OH BOY.
What a fun game. I have recently stumbled upon this 2007 gem. not since smackdown here comes THE pain have i had such fun. i actually fount myself playing this more than the recent svr 2010 game.
I spent hours playing as various wrestlers, wrestling in just the regular singles match. its just so fun and quick.
then the other matches included, not as much as a thq wrestling game, but they are still pretty fun.
even though the barbwire match and whatnot are fun, really there just a single, normal match, with the option of throwing an opponent to barbwire. still, fun to play a match like a deathmatch, fun to toss someone into a small explosion.
theres also stuff like a KO match or a "fight" match, where you just fight. no wrestling, just fight.
you can also add little tweaks to a regular match. im not talking, "KO- ON/OFF, "RING-OUT- ON/OFF", you can make the pin-count 2 if you like. or, you can adjust the speed, its crazy. not too much to tweak, but plenty to add some variety. and by plenty, i mean maybe 3 or 4 overall decisions to choose from before entering a match.
when your done playing with the 300+ default wrestlers (may recognize a few faces), you can then create your own wrestler.
which is pretty fun. very basic attires to choose fun, but with 500 slots to fill, can get pretty interesting. also a fun variety of moves to choose from, and a bit of AI as well.
i think theres 8 belt-slots you can create. limited choosing, but is nice to create your own belt. also can create your own ref. not just the looks, but who he is as a ref. also can create a ring and logos. the create-logos menu is an eye-sore at first, but you'll get use to it.
then theres a mode where you, yes YOU, create your own promotion. you can have an EXTREME promotion, a comedy promotion, a CLASSIC promotion, etc.
its not as deep as it could be, but again, fun to mess around with.
not only are the modes fun, but the music is too!
i have to say, the best music ever put out for a wrestling game. as you mess around on menus, or, 14 (i think i remember) different tracks for a match (15 if you count the "no music" option)
the downside to this game?
the controls are a bit different than what your use to. but to say "i walk over to an opponent and immediately my guy does something" is just plain wrong. you have to walk right into the opponent in order to perform a move.
it really isn't difficult unless theres more than like 4 people in the ring.
if your having trouble getting use to the controlling of this, you can set your opponent's difficulty level to 1. after a while, you'll get use to it. unless your not patient. but if you do have patience, it'll pay off. instead of mindless "pres this and that", you begin to think of how to beat your opponent.
another downside to this game would be not as deep and compelling as it could be. and, not too western-market friendly.
but it was released as new for only 14.99, so for that price, its certainly worth it. and, now its [...] on amazon?
if you have patience and an open-mind, and if you like wrestling (not a kid who likes sports-entertainment, who thinks john cena vs batista at wrestlemania is a good idea) then should pick it up.
way better than the svr games over the years.
i look forward to a sequel, set on the sony playstation 3 console.
imagine what they could do with that! 1,000, no, TEN-THOUSNAD slots for created wrestlers. 1,000 default guys to choose from! easier menus to move through. 50 different music-options! having even more matches and other created stuff more detailed and more variety. online mode. that would be amazing!
